St. Joseph Health System FY09 Online Annual Report
SITUATION
St. Joseph Health System (SJHS), a $4 billion not-for-profit health care system with14 acute care hospitals, was faced with a huge communications challenge of producing its annual report for a diverse stakeholder group. The collateral piece had become costly to produce and difficult to distribute to audiences across multiple states. SJHS wanted to transform the report into a singular online communication tool that was dynamic, accessible and cost effective. SJHS turned to Westbound to create its first interactive online annual report and help tell its story in a more compelling, meaningful and inspiring way.
IMPLEMENTATION
Working under a four-month deadline, Westbound was challenged to design a new web platform, draft all content and unveil the site at an annual trustee meeting! Westbound teamed up with 60+ hospital leaders to produce compelling content that showed how they had achieved their mission through the pursuit of the system’s strategic goals. A visually appealing mix of video, photos, graphics and stories on the new interactive site showcased SJHS operations and philanthropy efforts and highlighted hospital successes with captivating vignettes that personalized community benefit. The result was a platform fully compatible with the main site, both visually and technically.
RESULTS
The annual report was an overwhelming success for SJHS with Westbound completing the project on time and reducing the budget by 65 percent! More than 24,000 employees could now access the report online. Furthermore the vignettes were repurposed to tell the SJHS story through media pitching, donor outreach and hospital newsletters. The SJHS CEO even used specific vignettes in a recent speech, commenting that “their story had never been told better.” The project won a HPRMA Golden Advocate Award, OC/PRSA Award of Excellence and IE/PRSA Polaris Award – and Westbound won the business the next year!
