Mission Hospital’s “Mission Recognition Retreat”
SITUATION
Westbound Communications helped Mission Hospital express appreciation to its staff and meet ambitious public relations goals by creating and implementing an event that celebrated employees in a meaningful, heartfelt way. Dubbed the “Mission Recognition Retreat,” the event would “take care of the caregivers,” transforming a regular workday into a day of recognition through head-to-toe makeovers and massages. Through a peer-nomination process, the event ensured that all employees were recognized for their work. This was to also garner media coverage and increase hospital brand awareness.
IMPLEMENTATION
Westbound transformed the top of a parking structure into a unique retreat. Through a peer nomination process, select employees across various departments enjoyed head-to-toe makeovers including massage, hair cut/styling, facial, make-up application and wardrobe consultation. Each service was donated by community vendors who wanted to show their support. To show all 2,000-plus employees that the hospital also valued their work, all staff was invited to enjoy mini-massages. The community also showed its appreciation by signing banners that read “Thank you to our everyday heroes.”
RESULTS
The Mission Recognition Retreat was a great success. We received more than 240 nomination forms for 213 individuals, all with heartfelt testimonials of their hard work. Banners signed by the community were blanketed with more than 500 signatures and messages filled with blessings and thanks. The event made front page of the Orange County Register’s Local section, and ABC7 and KOCE-TV featured the event on their evening newscasts that same day. Additional coverage included articles in Nurseweek and Advance for Nurses. Perhaps most importantly, throughout the day, staff marveled at how special and honored they were that Mission made sure they felt valued.
