Confederation of Downtown Associations – “Downtown LA Walks”
SITUATION
Downtown LA Walks, which is the nation’s largest wayfinding signage program, consists of more than 1,300 signs adorning the streets and sidewalks of Downtown Los Angeles. The signs serve to highlight and unify Downtown’s 13 districts as well as encourage walking and public transportation. Westbound Communications was retained to lead Downtown LA Walks’ website development and media relations outreach, including a press conference to launch the program.
IMPLEMENTATION
In preparation for the installation of the first sign, we created www.downtownlawalks.com, a website that made exploring Downtown LA easy by featuring popular routes as well as the highlights of each district. The website generated significant buzz prior to the press conference, which was held in front of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The ceremony featured Los Angeles Council members Jan Perry and Bernard Parks, and Downtown Center Business Improvement (DCBID) President and CEO Carol Schatz, who, with the help of the Laker Girls, unveiled the first installed signs located at Grand Avenue and First Street.
RESULTS
Downtown LA Walks was officially completed in early 2006. At the time, interest in Downtown LA Walks was sparked with more than five stories in both English and Spanish-language media, most notably with full-page stories in La Opinion, Downtown News and a feature on ABC Channel 7. With a continued momentum of support through advertising and promotion of DowntownLAWalks.com, thousands of people have visited the website and use the signs to navigate through the highlights and icons of Downtown LA.
